HEX (Saxton Academy series) by Mackenzie L. McGuire

I love the cover!

3.5 stars!

Reece is being thrown for one loop after another. You can't help but feel bad for the girl. She lost her two best friends in an accident that almost took her life, too. Survivor's guilt is just the tip of the iceberg of this girl's problems. Life's become confusing and too much to take under the spotlight since her dad is a big time movie director. A new scene is exactly what she needs. At her new school, things seem too good to be true. She's already made new friends and garnered a crush. But classes are harder than her last school and her new friends have secrets that just might have everything to do with her.

I got a Gossip Girl vibe at the start of Hex. Reece seemed like a mix of Jenny Humphrey and Serena van Der Woodson. The best of both girl's qualities, I promise. She wasn't annoying. Her voice is of a troubled and confused adolescent trying to figure out how to get back to normal after a tragedy. She's sweet with a light sense of humor. I liked her jokes about her big butt. Her honesty was refreshing.

There were things I felt that weren't explained as much as they could have been to have me more invested into the story. I felt like I was being told the story and I missed the feeling of living in the world and knowing the characters. I don't feel as if I know them yet. I want to know Eli, Carden, and Tuesday better. I want to see Reece come into her powers and I want to feel the connection between the lovebirds. I want it to be beyond the mystical pull they feel and that's where I'm hanging. Wanting more and getting it, but not feeling it. I needed to experience them getting to know each other romantically. I just need MORE.

But there were definitely things that were unique and that were fun and made this book stand out from all the other witchy YA out there. That's what the author was trying to achieve and she did. It was well done and had a nice flow. There wasn't filler drama or garbage. Everything was in the book for a reason, a part of the plot. You're always trying to fit the puzzle pieces together. I'm still missing a few that I hope to place in the next book.

My favorite moment? Playing Tuesday's video game.
